FAMILY DOCTOR SHORTAGE

Financial incentives off the table for recruiting family doctors: city staff

KAMLOOPS — City staff are reporting back after Kamloops council asked them to explore financial incentives for family doctors who set up their practice in town.

Sarah Candido, external relations liaison with the City, says that idea is off the table.

“The June 2022 delegation presented ideas for physician recruitment that included the City providing funds in exchange for a physician’s agreement to come to Kamloops and open a family practice,” said Candido in a report that will be delivered to council on Tuesday (Sept. 27).

“However, under the Community Charter, providing a direct financial benefit such as this to a private business is not permitted; therefore, this idea will no longer be explored.”

The City is still exploring other ideas, like revitalization and permissive tax exemptions. Candido also mentioned “front of the line” service for potential clinics, where any new GP hoping to start up in Kamloops would have their business license application and municipal inspections, permitting and other administrative processes moved to the front of the queue.

“This would allow clinics or practices to open as quickly and smoothly as possible to get patients seeing a doctor as quickly as possible,” said Candido.

“Staff are working internally and with the delegation partners to seek best practices in making this request a reality.”

Administration is working on a brochure meant to entice physicians by showing the cultural and recreational landscape of the region. They are also working to update existing recruitment practices, such as free passes to the Tournament Capital Centre.

The next update on this matter will be to the newly elected council sometime in late fall or early winter 2022.
