KAMLOOPS — Thousands of students from across the Kamloops-Thompson School District honoured Canadian hero Terry Fox during a run at each of their schools on Friday afternoon (Sept. 23).

At Pacific Way Elementary, the intermediate students started at the school and ran through Highland Park, while the primary kids motored around the softball diamonds. For each student taking part, Fox’s Marathon of Hope means something special.

“I think Terry Fox was an amazing individual who not only ran for himself to become famous. He wasn’t even trying to become famous; he was running for other children and people that were suffering from cancer,” said Pac Way student Anna Hahn.

Fellow student Brooke Crundwell added, “It’s really special for me because it kind of shows how far you can go just being a normal citizen how much you can make a difference, and our school alone has made a really big difference.”

Pacific Way students raised $3,700 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Teachers says it’s important for the students to learn about the legacy of Fox.

“Learning about someone like Terry Fox is important for us all because we need to have good Canadian role models to look up to,” noted Pacific Way vice-principal Kelly Charron. “He was a young individual who saw his life change dramatically, and instead of look at the negative chose to see it in the positive. Having someone like that as a role model is just as valid today as it was then.”
