Former Fortune Motel officially opens as supportive housing building

KAMLOOPS — More than a year after buying the former Fortune Motel on the North Shore for $3.5 million, the B.C. government officially opened the facility as Genesis Place.

In a news release issued Friday (Sept. 23) morning, the province announced Genesis Place at 654 Fortune Dr. will hold a smaller building and a larger building with 28 studio units to serve as supportive homes. Former B.C. Attorney General and Housing Minister David Eby previously said the former Fortune Motel would provide 40 units of housing.

After renovations and repurposing the space to create an amenity and programming area, the province says the larger of the two buildings is open to residents.

The Kamloops branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) will operate Genesis Place. Residents will have access to around-the-clock support services, including daily meals and life-skills training. The CMHA will connect residents to Interior Health for any related services they may require.

“Our renewed mandate and commitment promotes natural and culturally holistic wellness-focused services that encourage social and emotional growth,” Alfred Achoba, CMHA executive director says. “Genesis Place facilitates connections including fostering reunion between family members, as well as preventing the development of new mental health challenges. We remain committed in using evidence-based strategies in our services and incorporating psychosocial rehabilitation programs.”

The province says BC Housing will redevelop the smaller building by working with the City of Kamloops through its permitting process. The province adds a long-term use for the building has not yet been determined.
