Ahead of the Oct. 15 municipal election, CFJC Today asked candidates for Kamloops City Council to complete a questionnaire, offering voters the chance to evaluate their candidacies.

QUESTIONNAIRE:

Describe yourself, your occupation and your historical connection to the Kamloops area.

As a lifelong resident of Kamloops, I am a very concerned citizen of the city. I worked in management position in the auto sales industry until 1994, and for the past 28 years have owned and operated an independent auto business in downtown Kamloops.

Unlike the three mayoral candidates who are current city councillors, I am not aligned with any special interest groups or political parties. I do not subscribe to the passive “stay in our lane” approach of these and other members of the current council. I am proactive and will bring that approach to the job of mayor.

What do you think is the best way to resolve disagreements or conflicts with your peers, those in a different department or those in a different jurisdiction?

Face to face meetings are the best way to resolve disagreements. Throughout my life I have strived to reach common solutions through serious negotiation and respectful dialogue.

What do you think is the biggest issue facing the City of Kamloops and how would use your elected position to address it?

The safety of our community, our streets, and our citizens is the single biggest issue facing the City of Kamloops. I would use the office of mayor to engage with other levels of government more proactively, utilizing the experience that I have gained over the past four years working first-hand with those experiencing homelessness, addiction, and street crime in our city.

How do you plan to involve Kamloops residents in your decision-making?

I have talked directly with hundreds of members of this community about these issues, and will continue to speak directly with, and listen to, our citizens.

What does a sustainable future for Kamloops and area look like to you and what does it need from mayor and council?

When the streets of Kamloops are safe and secure, prosperity will follow. Tourism, business investment, and development will return and will thrive when citizens and visitors alike feel safe and secure in our city.
