Commemorative coin to honour residential school survivors

WINNIPEG — A commemorative coin honouring the experiences of residential school survivors has been unveiled at a special ceremony.

The Royal Canadian Mint teamed up with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, Indigenous artists and survivors to create a keepsake that acknowledges the truths and traumas behind the residential school system.

The two-sided coin uses symbolic imagery to represent First Nations, Inuit and Metis teachings and traditional art forms that were stripped from students.

Stephanie Scott, who is the executive director of the centre, says the voices and visions of survivors are at the heart of the keepsake.

Eugene Arcand attended two residential schools over the course of 11 years.

He says working with the designers and the Mint gave survivors the space to share their truths without fear of embarrassment, shame or blame.

Marie Lemay, who is president and CEO of the Mint, says the coin can be displayed or worn to signal Canadian’s willingness to walk the path of reconciliation.

Proceeds from the coin will go to a support fund for survivors.
