KAMLOOPS — The 42nd annual Terry Fox Run brought out about 200 people to Riverside Park on Sunday (Sept. 18), walking and running to raise money for cancer research.

His face and name are known to all Canadians and his story still inspires people from all walks of life.

“Terry Fox, of course, has such an incredible legacy all across Canada. I remember as a child recognizing the hard work that he did and the important information that he brought to communities about cancer and cancer research,” said one attendee.

“We always remember, he has a legacy, he is our Canadian hero,” said Jo Berry during the run warmup.

“It’s kinda cool, because he did that and it wasn’t like just for himself or anything, he did that for so many people and it just seems very nice of him to do,” said Addison Thompson.

Andrea McCurrach is the event organizer. She says that even without an in-person run, the people of Kamloops still raised a substantial amount of money for cancer research in 2020 and 2021.

“It feels great to be back, I think we’re all a bit rusty because it’s been two years, but it’s just so nice to see friends and family come out and community come out to support our Canadian hero and keep his dream alive.”

The kids of Kamloops will get their chance to honour the Canadian hero on Friday (Sept. 23) during the school district’s Terry Fox Run.

“I wear this [Terry Fox] t-shirt around all summer and into September and I have little five and six years olds come up to me and say ‘hey, I know who that is, that’s Terry Fox,” said McCurrach.

“That’s pretty amazing that many years on.”
