Busy weekend in Kamloops expected as a slate of events takes over the city

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops residents will be kept busy on Saturday (September 17) as Riverside Park will host the VW Turtle Race for charity and the Children’s Art Festival.

Both events are back in person for the first time since 2019 and the proceeds from the Turtle Race support four Kamloops charities.

“Those charities will share equitably in each one of [the events]. The four charities this goes toward this year are the Chris Rose (Therapy Centre for Autism), the Kamloops Therapeutic Riding Centre, the Kamloops Brain Injury Association and the BC SCPA,” says organizer Bryce Herman.

The toy turtles will be unloaded into the South Thompson River and the first turtle to cross the finish line wins.

Turtles can be purchased for 10 dollars each and Herman adds that he hopes the race brings in more than $30,000 to aid those charities in rebounding from the pandemic.

“There were a number of years there where they struggled to do fundraising. Hopefully, this is a way of helping them get their feet under them as we proceed out of this pandemic,” Herman adds.

On the Children’s Arts Festival side, the event will be full of activities.

“There’s going to be music and performances, there’s going to be a lot of art-making going on and in the afternoon, there’s going to be a dance party where we’re trying to make the biggest rainbow — so if you’re coming, wear your favourite colour and be a part of the rainbow,” says Tanya Nielson with the Kamloops Arts Council.

Nielson says the arts festival helps to grow a larger interest in the arts community while showcasing talents for free.

“It’s to provide a free event for children and families and kids [and people] of all ages from 4 to 80 just to provide a service to the community,” Nielson adds.

The Children Art’s Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the turtles will be off and running with the first race at 1:00 p.m. all for a good cause.
