KAMLOOPS — The Union of B.C. Municipalities annual general convention in underway in Whistler, as councillor and mayors from around B.C. gather with provincial MLAs to discuss the challenges facing their communities.

Kamloops’ contingent includes Mayor Ken Christian and council, along with MLAs Todd Stone and Peter Milobar.

While the City is preparing to meet with ministers to discuss things like transportation, and mental health and addictions. MLA Milobar is working with cities around the Interior about concerns of health care and cost of living.

“We can have those conversations from a more provincial view of things. All from law and order and the catch and release that we are seeing right now to crime on our streets and the healthcare challenges we are facing. I think it punctuates the point for whatever government is in terms of the seriousness that these communities are feeling on a lot of these wide-ranging issues,” said Milobar.

As the official opposition, B.C. Liberal politicians are taking part in meetings tackling a wide range of issues. Milobar is scheduled to meet with representatives from Clearwater, Barriere and the TNRD to speak to water systems among other issues.

“I just had a breakfast meeting with the resource industry, and what is going on in their world. And of course, that is critical for an area of the province like Kamloops. There are a lot of meetings that take place throughout the week and all those inputs coming in from local elected officials, so we start to find that common theme that really does cut across any size of community, no matter where you are located in the province,” added Milobar.

The UBCM convention wraps up on Friday (Sept. 16).
