Fifteen contenders for Clearwater council; Blackwell challenged by freeman

CLEARWATER, B.C. — Clearwater Mayor Merlin Blackwell has some competition in the upcoming municipal election.

A candidate list on CivicInfo B.C. shows Blackwell will be challenged by Dean Clifford, a proponent of the ‘freeman on the land’ movement.

Blackwell was first elected in 2018, beating out Jon Kreke.

There are a whopping 15 candidates for the six council spots, including five incumbents:

  • Barry Banford
  • Lynne Frizzle
  • Bill Haring
  • Lyle Mackenzie
  • Shelley Sim

Incumbent Lucy Taylor is not running for re-election.

The 10 outside candidates are:

  • Theresa Braaten
  • Suzanne Emerson
  • Candus Graffunder
  • Tom Grimm
  • Carly Lepoidvin
  • Ken Matheson
  • Harry Minci
  • Lorelei Rogers
  • Ron Rotzetter
  • Jessica Toscano

Candidates have until Friday, Sept. 16 to withdraw their names from the ballot.

The B.C. municipal elections will take place Oct. 15, 2022.
