COLLINS: Allowing international students to work more has pluses and minuses

Sep 11, 2022 | 7:00 AM

A double-edged sword. That, in a nutshell, is the effect of a motion passed by council which could allow international students to work more hours.

Councillor Bill Sarai, who proposed the motion, says it will help the students survive financially in these times of soaring costs and perhaps help businesses find help when there is a shortage of workers.

Councillor Dale Bass has concerns about students’ grades slipping if they’re allowed to work more. Her concerns are valid.

The motion doesn’t mean anything unless a letter sent to the federal government advocating the move bears fruit.

But I am still in favor of the motion, if for no other reason than to see if it catches any traction. We are all surely aware of the number of businesses trying to stay afloat amid the increasing costs of doing business and finding enough workers to keep doors open.

If this ever goes anywhere, there will have to be some checks and balances to ensure the students’ grades are kept up. After all, their first priority here is to get an education.

But if we can create a win-win situation, I think it’s worth a try.
