KAMLOOPS — As students are set to return to the classroom on Tuesday (Sept. 6) morning, the Ministries of Health and Education have released the safety protocols for the new year.

Measures for protecting students and families include staying up to date with all your vaccines, practicing health awareness, and staying home when sick.

School District 73 Superintendent Rhonda Nixon was happy to see the safety measures follow closely what was being done in June before summer break.

“We were very pleased to see that they really were keeping with what saw in June. We have stay home when sick, use the daily health check to monitor oneself, following the guidelines on the B.C. Centre for Disease Control website. People are used to that. Masks being a personal choice and treated with great sensitivity. So, if someone wants to wear a masks that’s welcomed, if someone doesn’t wear a mask, that is also welcomed,” said Nixon.

The Ministry of Education and Child Care has worked with education partners to update the communicable disease guidelines for K to 12 schools, based on recently updated public health guidance.

Wearing a mask will continue to be a personal choice, and that choice will be supported and respected.

“The focus was on prevention and continuation of what we did before and that is where we are starting with our practices and protocols. So, we will have safe environments, but we are really practiced at it. There wasn’t a lot of concern about brining people in early or having to educate parents, because people know how to manage this prevention routine,” said Nixon.
