Kamloops refugee group hosting volunteer training session to help Ukrainian newcomers
KAMLOOPS — A refugee resettlement group is putting out the call for Kamloops residents to help Ukrainian newcomers arrive to the city.
In a news release issued Friday (Sept. 2) morning, Refugee and Friends Together (RAFT) says nearly 70 Ukrainians have settled in the Kamloops area over the last six months and more are expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
During a training session with Kamloops Immigrant Services Society, RAFT says it’s looking to train Kamloops residents to help support Ukrainian newcomers with community orientation, cultural support, and helping them practice English. The group says activities could include helping Ukrainian newcomers learn how to use the bus, going to a hockey game, or meeting for coffee or tea.
The training session is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hills of Peace Lutheran Church on 695 Robson Dr.
