KAMLOOPS — It’s the worst nightmare for a hiker – suffering an injury that leaves you stranded. This time it didn’t happen in the wilderness, it happened in the city.

A man with an injured leg was rescued from Guerin Creek Wednesday (August 31) afternoon. RCMP officers attended Guerin Creek Way for a well-being check and heard screams coming from the gully.

A man was at the bottom of the Guerin Creek ravine and rescue crews say he had been there overnight.

“[RCMP] called us saying the patient would most likely require rope rescue, they had a severe femur injury and they had been there for some time. Our rope rescue truck, our rescue truck and two engines responded,” says Scott Karpiak, Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) Assistant Chief of Operations.

It’s believed that the unidentified man broke his femur and was unable to walk.

Karpiak says there is no indication of how the person ended up in the gully and adds that the man’s location was difficult to get to and required a special rope team to lift him out of trouble.

“With this type of situation, we have an offroad stretcher that we can wheel people out on – this was not an option. We ended up with a twin tension system lowering two members and a basket down, packaging the patient and then raising the patient back up.”

The man was later transferred to hospital by ambulance.

Kamloops Fire Rescue stresses the importance of telling friends or family members of your location when hiking around Kamloops and giving an estimated time of when they should expect you home.
