KAMLOOPS — Traffic was delayed on Hillside Drive as Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) firefighters battled a fire in the area.

Around 11:15 Wednesday morning an interface fire was reported to Kamloops Fire Rescue in a gully between Hillside Drive and Cariboo Place.

“Kamloops Fire Rescue was called for a report of an interface fire. Crews arrived and the incident commander quickly identified the possibility for growth in this area going up these two channels. [The incident commander] called for more resources, bush trucks and tender trucks.”

The initial reports said the fire was 50 feet by 50 feet, but it quickly grew, scorching much of the hillside.

“Things are dry as always and we’re back into a bit of a warm spell so that’s always the concern, and it’s a dry grass area, and sagebrush and the olive trees there, so lots of good fuel for it to move quickly. It’s good that there’s not much wind today so that prevented it from moving really quickly or jumping.”

Firefighters attacked the blaze from three sides. By 11:45 a.m., the fire had been mostly knocked down and crews were cleaning up. The cause at this time is unknown.

“We’ve got a fire prevention officer coming to the scene, and they’ll conduct an investigation and see if they can determine exactly where and how the fire started,” said Uzeloc.

After a cool weekend, a heat wave is moving through Kamloops, with highs forecast up to 37 C on Friday. Uzolec urges residents to be fire-smart.

“Be extra careful, now that the heats up and things are dry, we haven’t had some moisture in a while. Be careful with all your activities out in the wooded areas and make sure you dispose of smoking materials appropriately.”
