KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Film Society has partnered with Tk’emlúps te Secwe´pemc to present the inaugural Indigenous film festival this weekend. The festival, running from Thursday (Sept. 1) to Saturday (Sept. 3), will feature nine feature films and highlight various Indigenous artists through special engagement events.

The executive director of the film society, Dusan Magdolen, said the idea of bringing an Indigenous festival to the paramount theatre is the first of a variety of smaller fests they’re discussing.

“It’s something that has been on our mind since we took over the Paramount Theatre and had more resources to go beyond just our regular March festival and our Thursday film series. We also wanted to have these micro-festivals that were more themed and with a certain demographic,” said Magdolen.

“So it was natural to reach out to Tk’emlúps and talk to them,” said Magdolen.

Funding for the event came through a grant from the BC Arts Council. Indigenous movies are always presented as part of Kamloops’ film festival but this weekend will allow them to take centre stage.

“This is our corner of the game, movies. So, what can we do to have these stories told — I think this is our part to play and we are very proud of that, happy about it and excited,” added Magdolen.

The list of films and showtimes can be found on the KFS website, and tickets are available now.
