Hospitality industry associations call for resolution of BCGEU labour dispute

KAMLOOPS — A broad coalition of hospitality industry associations is calling on the province and the BCGEU to come to an agreement and end the strike that is affecting liquor and cannabis distribution across BC.

The Alliance of Beverage Licensees (ABLE), along with the BC Restaurant and Food Services Association and 16 other industry associations have all signed a letter, addressed to BCGEU President Stephanie Smith and Premier John Horgan.

The letter calls attention to the difficult years the industry has experienced around the pandemic. They’re calling on both sides for a swift resolution to help ensure that over 200,000 workers are able to keep their jobs.

“Coming off of COVID, a strike like this taking away our access to alcohol and cannabis is devastating,” Al Deacon, ABLE Board Member explains. “There’s people closing. There’s shops that are shut down in this town. We’ve got a good supply of product here, but after this week, who knows what we’re going to have on our shelves?”

Spirits and any drinks containing hard alcohol are the hardest hit products for many stores and pubs. Deacon says there aren’t a lot of those products remaining on his shelves and in his fridges.

“Our liquor store shelves next door [at the Sahali Liquor Store] have been depleted. People want what they want and people came and bought it in droves. They cleaned us out relatively quickly. We’ve still got some stuff on the shelves, but we just need for this to end, replenish things, and get back to business as normal.”
