Mudslide along Highway 8 cuts off Shackan reserve

Aug 24, 2022 | 4:37 PM

MERRITT, B.C. — UPDATE: The Shackan Indian Band has issued an evacuation order.

EARLIER: The B.C. Ministry of Transportation says a mudslide that came down across Highway 8 west of Merritt Tuesday (Aug. 23) has effectively cut off the Shackan Indian Band’s reserve.

Storm activity brought mud and debris down over the highway between the east and west Dot Ranch Cut-Off Roads, closing the route east of the Shackan reserve. The highway is still closed west of the reserve due to the atmospheric river event that caused heavy damage in November, 2021.
