Kamloops native Stankoven reflects on playing huge role for Canada at WJC

KAMLOOPS— Less than 48 hours after notching an assist on the golden goal at the world junior hockey championships in Edmonton, Logan Stankoven is back in Kamloops.

CFJC Today caught up with him Monday afternoon (Aug. 22) to find out more about the Kamloops kid’s experience on one of hockey’s biggest stages.

Back in Kamloops, Stankoven is finally relaxing after a whirlwind three-week stretch. It’s easier to do after you set up the overtime game-winning goal in the World Junior Hockey Championship gold medal game.

“I knew that the one defenseman had committed to playing me. He kind of laid down, so I tried to pull the puck away from his stick… he just kind of got a knick of it and knocked it off my stick,” Stankoven recalls. “The back checker overcommitted and came to me, and that left Kent [Johnson] wide open, back door. I thought I’d protect the puck and almost do a spin-o-rama and fed it Kent, and he finished it off.”

Of course, Team Canada was just millimetres from losing that game. Team Captain Mason McTavish made an incredible play, saving an almost sure goal, just minutes before the game-winning rush.

“We couldn’t believe that McTavish made that play to knock it out mid-air,” Stankoven says. “He knocked it down, made an unbelievable play and basically saved our tournament.”

The win was even more special for Stankoven, as he got to share it with Kamloops Blazers teammate and friend, Dylan Garand.

“It’s awesome obviously, having a teammate there with you,” Logan says. “I’ve played with him for three or four years now, so I’ve got to know him really well. Just a great human being, and a great guy off the ice.”

And of course, in just four short months the 2023 World Junior Championships will begin in Halifax, Nova Scotia. You’d better believe Logan is looking forward to that.

“Christmastime — you know, that’s World Junior time. When that comes around, I’ll be looking forward to that, as well.”
