KAMLOOPS β€” The City of Kamloops has been awarded more than $1.5 million from a provincial grant program meant to offer services to the homeless population.

In a news release, Social and Community Development Supervisor Ty Helgason says the $1,509,400 comes in the form of a Strengthening Communities Services grant.

Helgason says the funds will go toward β€œnew services and the continuation of other vital outreach and supports for people in our community who are experiencing homelessness.”

This year, that means funding:

  • a continuation of shuttle services to and from shelters
  • an increase in the number of Community Service Officers who work with local outreach workers to provide unsheltered homeless individuals consistent information and access to care
  • an increase in security services that contribute to improved safety and reduction of community concerns
  • a continuation of the Sharps Recovery Peer Program, which offers supportive employment to people with lived experience of homelessness
  • community meetings that include social service, Indigenous, government, business, neighbourhood, and City representatives to focus on collaborative approaches to community safety
  • the development of educational videos that feature peers with lived or living experience of homelessness to help educate the community and reduce stigma

The funding is about $40,000 more than the City of Kamloops received from the same grant program in 2021.
