COLLINS: The homeless are not the only ones in need

Aug 21, 2022 | 7:00 AM

More and more developments are taking place in Kamloops to try to deal with the homeless and marginalized population. We have developed places on both the North and South Shores and in the Southgate area. I’m not an expert, but I’m not sure such places are viable in Pineview or way out in Westsyde.

They are not popular with those who live nearby, but they have to be built where that segment of the population is located. While we are making progress in this area, there is still much to be done.

My big concern right now is for the plight of the so-called middle class. The median household income in Kamloops is a shade under $74,000. Rentals are tough to find everywhere. In Kamloops, they are virtually non-existent. There are a few apartment rentals, but if you’re looking for a house because you have two kids and a dog, good luck. And places that do come along are often not in the most desirable areas unless you are extremely lucky.

The rental market is varied. You might luck out and get a small place, probably an apartment, for under $1000 a month. But likely your cost will be above that, maybe well above that. Add your utilities, amenities, food, costs for your kids and you can see pretty quickly why there is such despair among families these days.

People know they may never be able to afford a home, and may not be able to rent either.

I am not saying we should slow down the construction of shelters for those who need that kind of support.

I am saying that those shelters are almost entirely funded by the taxes of the middle class, and if we don’t find a way to ease their burden, all these other things will come tumbling down like a house of cards.

I’m Doug Collins, and that’s one Man’s Opinion.
