SICAMOUS, B.C. — The wildfire that sparked in a remote area of the Anstey Peninsula on Shuswap Lake on Tuesday has nearly doubled in size and destroyed a cabin.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD), said the Mt. Grice-Hutchinson wildfire, southwest of Seymore Arm, was estimated to be 7.9 hectraes in size Thursday (Aug. 18). The fire was reported as being four hectares in size on Wednesday (Aug. 17).

The BC Wildfire Service is working to contain and investigate the fire, which is believed to be human caused.

The area is remote and accessible by boat only.

One cabin has been destroyed in the blaze, and fire crews have been tasked with protecting the other cabins and structures in the area by setting up multiple sprinkler systems around the properties.

An evacuation alert is in place for the cabins in the Mt. Grice-Hutchinson area.

The fire is burning up a heavy timbered west-facing steep slope, and firefighters are tackling the blaze both on the ground and with helicopter bucketing and air tanker drops.

The public is advised to stear clear of the area and to avoid interfering with firefighting operations.
