KAMLOOPS — Kamloops city council is seeking a grant to make safety and noise-reducing improvements as trains pass through the city.

The city’s Transportation Manager, Purvez Irani, has received multiple complaints about train whistle noises saying it was disrupting in the area.

On Tuesday (August 16), city council approved a motion to apply to Transport Canada for grant funding.

“We’ve received complaints since the spring of last year and that’s why council directed us to see grant opportunities. The project costs are around $2.3 million, if we win the grant, to make these safety improvements. If we win the grant, the federal government would pay 80 per cent and the municipality would only pay 20 per cent,” Irani says.

If the grants get approved, upgrades will be made to three separate rail crossings that are at Lorne Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues.

“It will be in the shape of flashing lights and bells and also fencing along the corridor and that can happen once we hear of grant opportunities available,” Irani adds.

Irani says it may take a while to get approval for the funding, but he just hopes the City can make the improvements to keep residents safe.
