KAMLOOPS — Municipal elections in British Columbia are exactly 60 days away, as voters will head to the poll on October 15. In Kamloops, residents will elect a new mayor, eight councillors and five school board trustees.

The City of Kamloops is looking to ensure residents can easily get out to cast a ballot in this October’s municipal election. That means expanding mail-in ballot eligibility to anybody who wants one and increasing advance polling availability.

“Traditionally, we have always held our advance polling location at Heritage House in Riverside Park. This year we have added a polling place on our advance days of October 5, 8 and 12 at McArthur Island Sport Centre. Nice and convenient that it is accessible on two transit routes, primarily Number 2,” said Amanda Passmore, Chief Election Officer for the City of Kamloops.

For those interested in running for office, nomination packages are now available at city hall. The 500-page document provides all the information required for somebody mulling over a potential run.

“Anybody who is wishing to run has to come in and meet with me and my team between August 30 and September 9, to deliver us their nomination package. We sign off that everything is accurate and true, and then they become officially a candidate to run in the city election,” added Passmore.

Changes have been made since the 2018 election for voter eligibility, any B.C. resident living in Kamloops as of election night will be able to cast a ballot.

“You have to be a resident of the province of British Columbia for six months prior to general voting day. But, there is no longer a time limit on how long you have been a Kamloops resident prior to voting. You could show up and have a tenancy agreement dated for October 15, and say I’m officially a resident of Kamloops as of this Saturday, you are eligible to vote,” said Passmore.

A finalized list of candidates will be made official by Passmore on Monday, September 19, ahead of the October 15 election.

As of today, there is five candidates for mayor, and more than a dozen for council.
