DQ’s Miracle Treat Day returns to Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — It’s a loud and fast-moving operation behind the counter Thursday (Aug. 11) at the downtown Dairy Queen in Kamloops; Miracle Treat Day has arrived. By the end of the post-dinner dessert rush, staff will have churned out hundreds of Blizzards.

“How many Blizzards do you think you’ve made so far today?” CFJC crews asked DQ employee Izzy Jaorawala.

“About 100,” he replied.

“And how long have you been at work?”

“One hour.”

Net proceeds from Blizzards sold Thursday will be donated through the Children’s Miracle Network to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. It’s a meaningful cause for thousands of families — even downtown owner Angelo Fontana’s.

“For me on the personal side, I have two kids and I’ve used BC Children’s (Hospital) with my first. That’s a personal tie-in. It’s our children; what better charity than that?”

Fontana has taken part in every treat day since the inaugural event more than a decade ago, and over the years he says you can rely on Kamloops to show up and raise thousands of dollars.

“It’s grown every year. Kamloops — whether it’s Miracle Treat Day or any other cause — has always done a fantastic job and will continue to,” he says, “and I think today as we go through our day, is only going to show it again.”

What is the number one flavour served up? Apparently, Kamloops is loyal to the classic. Fontana says no matter what new seasonal flavours come into rotation, Oreo remains at the top.

“Oreo never seems to vanish from people’s minds so I think it’s Oreo,” Jaorawala says it’s the most popular flavour he stirs up, “And my personal favourite is Oreo as well.”

“Just the regular (Oreo) — I love the regular and I always have,” customer Cadence Crosman told CFJC, “The regular is the best.”

According to Crosman and others who stopped in, Miracle Treat Day is a no-brainer. Tastes good and feels good.

“That’s actually really cool,” she says, pointing out the donation part of the day. “I think it’s a good thing that they’re doing.”

“Come on down, have a Blizzard — fantastic treat — and help the kids. I think it’s just the right thing to do,” adds Fontana.
