Hundreds of Kamloops residents bid in City’s auction of surplus, unclaimed items

KAMLOOPS — City crews are busy clearing out Valleyview Arena, after a successful first auction of surplus equipment and unclaimed bicycles.

According to Team Auctions territory manager Gord Gerrits, more than 400 people bid on items between Thursday and Saturday, selling off about 99 per cent of what the municipality had available.

“(We) got calls from everywhere on some of the items, which is great,” notes Gerrits. “I think most of the bikes went to local (people), some of the construction equipment attachments — those were good items. (We) had quite a few office supply items that the City didn’t need anymore. They were surplus.”

The bikes were hot commodities for bidders, and Kamloops’ Purchasing and Inventory Manager Ray Sison says of the hundreds of bicycles available, one bike that had been stolen was claimed by a resident.

As for whether the auction will become a yearly event?

“Ideally not,” explains Sison. “We do not like selling lost and stolen items, but in the event that there is the opportunity, absolutely we will look into it if it makes sense to do so.”

Successful bidders have until Tuesday (Aug. 9) at 8:00 p.m to pick up their items from the Valleyview Arena.
