KAMLOOPS — Six weeks ago, a little Boston Terrier named Genie wandered out of the house and ran away from her home in Kamloops.

“A neighbour came over and moved out a table and in that time she’s never left my side and when I came back inside the dog was gone,” says Genie’s owner, Lisa McAndrew.

“I usually take her for a walk right after and she obviously fled my area. I was completely devastated and went into panic mode and went everywhere to look for her, and there were no sightings.”

Many attempts were made to bring Genie home, and search crews were even hired from Vancouver. Through long days and nights, McAndrew says the community came together to help look for her.

“There were sightings up in Batchelor Heights in the Lac Du Bois area – that’s when we set up a trap and went up there. There were a couple of sightings but she was so nervous to even come to us,” adds McAndrew.

“I was trying to figure out how are we going to get this dog. It just became so exhausting during hours of the night,” says Nikki Milenk, who helped search for Genie.

McAndrew and her daughter Ireland say they went through a whirlwind of emotions throughout the six weeks.

“I felt really, really, really sad,” Ireland said.

“It’s really been upsetting for her (Ireland) because that’s her everything too. She’s known her (Genie) since we’ve had her – since she was about two and a half [years old]. That’s Ireland’s little companion as well so it’s been difficult on my family and definitely my daughter,” McAndrew added.

However after nearly two months of searching, on Monday (August 1), Genie was found.

“I jumped out, told her to stop, she stopped, ran over to me, and came into my arms. We are very overwhelmed and I can’t thank the community [enough] so much.”

What is being called ‘Genie’s journey’ luckily had a happy ending – and the family is just happy she’s home.
