KAMLOOPS — As the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) fights the Watching Creek Wildfire just outside of Kamloops, the City has activated it’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). The EOC is only at level 1 on a three-level scale. The Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) has issued an evacuation alert for the Lac du Bois area, including Pass Lake , Mcqueen Lake and Isobel lake.

The City of Kamloops is working closely with the BCWS, Kamloops Fire Rescue and other partners to monitor the wildfire and prepare for any necessary response. The City is reminding citizens to download the Voyent! Alert app to receive important notices directly to their cellphone.

“We’ve got Kamloops Fire Rescue working very closely with BC Wildfire Service to understand the thresholds and the fire growth as it pertains to the Watching Creek wildfire. As of right now there is no imminent threat to any residence and there is no evacuation alerts or orders in place for the City of Kamloops,” said Will Beatty, Kamloops Emergency Preparedness Manager.

As of today, an Incident Management Team has taken over command of the wildfire. The Kamloops EOC is working to find a place for them to operate within the city, should it come to that.

“Right now we are offering logistical support to BC Wildfire Service trying to find spots for their Incident Management Team to be located on this wildfire of note. With wind direction and different fire growth it can require more resources. So we are trying to find space for that Incident Management Team, should it be needed,” said Beatty.
