Wildfire near Highway 1 being held, Watching Creek wildfire currently not a threat to Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says 80 new wildfires sparks over the long weekend, 50 of which have been determined to be caused by lightning.

The Polygon Pond wildfire near Highway 1 around eight kilometres west of Kamloops is being held at three hectares in size.

North of the Thompson River, the Thompson Nicola Regional District issued an evacuation alert for properties northwest of Kamloops due to the 80-hectare, out of control Watching Creek wildfire.

In a social media post, the City of Kamloops says the Watching Creek wildfire is not a threat to city residents at this time. The City says BCWS will notify it if the wildfire becomes a threat.

A campfire ban will be in effect in the Kamloops Fire Centre starting Thursday (Aug. 4).

In the Cariboo, the Maria Creek wildfire south of Clinton is listed at 45 hectares and is classified out of control.

Currently, there are two wildfires of note: the Nohomin Creek Wildfire nearly Lytton measures at 3,057 hectares while the Keremeos Creek Wildfire southwest of Penticton has grown to 2,264 hectares since igniting on Friday (July 31).

Heat warning lifted

Environment Canada ended its week-long heat warning for most of B.C. Tuesday (Aug. 2) morning.

According to Environment Canada’s forecast as of Tuesday morning, temperatures are expected to drop below 30 in Kamloops starting Wednesday and into the week. However, warmer conditions are expected to return this weekend.
