High winds and hot temperatures fueling fires near Kamloops
KAMLOOPS – A series of wildfires have popped up near Kamloops Monday (Aug. 1) afternoon, producing large plumes of smoke and reminding residents of recent smokey summers.
The Watching Creek wildfire was initially started by lightning Friday and is considered to be out of control. BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) Fire Information Officer Melanie Bibeau, says the fire was being fought with ground crews and air support.
However with strong afternoon winds and hot temperatures, the wildfire exploded today, forcing BCWS to evacuate all 14 ground personnel battling the blaze. Air operations were also suspended for safety reasons.
The fire is located approximately 15 km northwest of Kamloops and at last measurement, has burned 3.7 hectares.
