KAMLOOPS – A series of wildfires have popped up near Kamloops Monday (Aug. 1) afternoon, producing large plumes of smoke and reminding residents of recent smokey summers.

The Watching Creek wildfire was initially started by lightning Friday and is considered to be out of control. BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) Fire Information Officer Melanie Bibeau, says the fire was being fought with ground crews and air support.

However with strong afternoon winds and hot temperatures, the wildfire exploded today, forcing BCWS to evacuate all 14 ground personnel battling the blaze. Air operations were also suspended for safety reasons.

The fire is considered to be out of control.

North of Kamloops near Sun Peaks, the BCWS has identified the Bush Creek wildfire. A Rapattack team of 3 personnel have been deployed to the small fire in an effort to prevent it from getting out of hand. The first was spotted Monday morning.
