Wildfires near Ashcroft classified as “out of control”

UPDATE (July 31, 1 p.m.): The smaller wildfire is classed as under control.

ASHCROFT — Two wildfires located South of Ashcroft have been upgraded to “out of control,” according to the BC Wildfire Service.

The fires labeled Cornwall Creek and Minaberriet Creek started Thursday (July 28) night and the Kamloops Fire Centre was made aware of them and sent crews to the area.

Air tankers, helicopters, and heavy equipment were sent to the fire areas in an attempt to diffuse the blazes.

The Cornwall Creek fire is believed to be lightning-caused and is currently four hectares in size.

A fire directly behind Cornwall Creek is the Minaberriet Creek which is also believed to be caused by a lightning strike that is 16.7 hectares in size.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, however, and no evacuation alert has been issued.
