WILDFIRE NEAR LYTTON

Nohomin Creek wildfire now more than 3,000 hectares in size

LYTTON — The Nohomin Creek wildfire near Lytton that started on July 14, is now more than 3,000 hectares in size according to the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS).

A wildfire 3,057 hectares in size is burning 1.7 kilometres outside of the village of Lytton and has continued to grow.

Recently, BC Hydro says the fire burned down 60 power poles, damaged power lines and transformer banks, and interrupted power to 112 customers in the area.

That power has been restored to all of its customers in the affected area.

Over the long weekend, dry conditions are expected in the region and BC which may lead to an increase in the growth of the wildfire and higher fire activity.

In the Stein Valley, crews are working to establish wet lines and fuel-free areas.

Currently, there are 95 firefighters, 11 helicopters, and three heavy equipment units battling the blaze.

The fire is believed to be human-caused but remains under investigation.
