KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Mounties are passing along their thanks to a member of the community who came to the aid of an RCMP officer this week.

In a release, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn says on Wednesday (July 27) around 10:10 a.m., an officer was responding to a request for a well-being check on the 1000-block of Westminister Avenue on the city’s north shore.

He eventually found himself in need of emergency police back-up, and the first person to arrive at the scene was a nearby civilian.

“What came in as a standard complaint to check on a group of people allegedly using drugs and acting in a lewd manner, led to something much different when one of the men the officer was checking on left quickly,” says Evelyn, “Police checks confirmed the man had a warrant and the officer began patrolling the area to locate him.”

The officer found the man in an alleyway along the 900-block of Tranquille Road, but as he attempted to the arrest the man, the suspect became resistant. A struggle ensued and went to the ground, however a person nearby came to the aid of the officer and helped secure the man until other police arrived.

“The officer was alone at the time of the arrest and without the assistance of the civilian, the situation could have quickly gotten worse during the short time it took for other officers to locate him,” added Cpl. Evelyn.

RCMP say unfortunately the officer wasn’t able to get the name of the person who helped out before he left the scene. The local detachment says the help was appreciated and would like to say thank you.
