KAMLOOPS — WorkSafeBC wants to remind workers to stay cool in this hot weather we’re experiencing this week.

With temperatures expected to reach the high-30s this week, the workplace safety organization sent out a media release on Tuesday (July 26) reminding employers and employees of the risks of working in the heat.

Workers are reminded to drink plenty of water, wear light, loose-fitting clothing, and take rest breaks often. Suzana Prpic, Senior Manager of Prevention Field Services says employers should understand how best to prevent heat stress, as well

“Employers really need to monitor the heat conditions and require workers not to work alone,” Prpic explains. “If there are any concerns, workers can connect with their supervisors at the very early signs of any concerns surrounding heat stress, make sure there’s adequate first aid coverage, whether the work is being done indoors or outdoors.”

According to WorkSafeBC, 35 per cent of claims related to heart stress last year were filed by indoor workers, so it’s important to be vigilant working indoors and outdoors. If possible, it’s also recommended to adjust the work day to avoid working during the hottest hours of the day.

“Heat stress is preventable and it’s really important to start the day planning, having great communication, engaging workers – if you’ve got a joint health and safety committee or safety representative on site, and keep the awareness messaging high. Recognize the early signs of concern and don’t let thirst set in. All of those are really important reminders.”
