KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops has announced it will open the concourse at Sandman Centre to give residents temporary relief from predicted record-breaking temperatures this week.

In a news release issued Monday (July 25) morning, the City says Sandman Centre – located at 300 Lorne St. downtown – will be open as a cooling centre on Tuesday (July 26) from noon to 8 p.m. and operate daily until the end of the heat event.

Environment Canada recently issued a heat warning that’s expected to begin Tuesday and last until Saturday (July 30).

Additionally, the City says it’s working with community partners to ensure bottled water is available for people at risk for heat-related illnesses. Community Service Officers will be watching for signs of heat-related illness and distributing water during their patrols, and they will encourage people to escape the heat wherever possible.
