Kamloops residents told to prepare for ‘moderate heat wave’

KAMLOOPS — The summer heat has arrived in the tournament capital as temperatures have begun routinely cresting the 30 degree mark. But as residents re-acclimatize themselves with warm weather, Environment Canada warns it only going up from here.

“What we are seeing is a moderate type of heat event for next week. We will probably be near heat warning criteria — we are looking into that, issuing some heat warning potentially for portions of British Columbia for the early part of next week. We are going to be hitting temperatures in the high thirties,” said meteorologist Matt Loney.

Despite the increased temperatures, Loney noted Kamloops is still well below the heat dome of last year.

“We are looking at basically a strong summer-like ridge of high pressure. As you recall from last year we did hit temperatures in the mid-forties, in fact we topped out at Kamloops airport at 46.2. We aren’t seeing temperatures anywhere close to that for this particular event,” stated Loney.

As temperatures rise, everybody has they own method to beating the heat, even the kids.

“Go swimming and go to the water park,” said Jackson Brunt.

“Go to a nice pool and the beach,” added Nolan Miller.

Beyond the youth, the moms, dads and grand parents are taking full advantage of a day in the water.

“Oh it’s so nice, you live in Kamloops to have the nice summers and now that it’s finally here we can come and enjoy it. It’s just wonderful,” said Jackson’s mom.

“This is good weather, I’m glad it has come, people have been waiting for this. Hope they go camping,” noted Richard Chapman.

With the warm weather expected to stick around for the foreseeable future, residents are reminded to check up on their friends and neighbours.

“Keep cool, keep hydrated, keep in touch with those who may be vulnerable to the heat. That’s folks that are young of course and those on the elderly side. So, this is a moderate heat wave, but it’s certainly something everybody should be preparing for,” said Loney.
