COLLINS: Is David Eby the new ‘King of the Hill?’

AT THIS POINT, David Eby seems to be the odds-on favourite to replace John Horgan as leader of the NDP. While he hasn’t officially announced his intentions, Eby doesn’t seem to have anyone in his path.

But there are concerns among those who follow politics that Eby has some baggage.

I was interested in reading a couple of columns in the Vancouver Sun this week — by Vaughn Palmer about the Ernst and Young report on B.C. Housing, and by Ian Mulgrew on the ICBC dumpster fire, where the NDP tried twice to limit legitimate requests to have expert testimony costs limited. Eby was involved as minister in those issues.

There was nothing suspicious about any of this, let’s make that clear. It was more the way the Ernst report was released, when it would get the least amount of exposure and the potential for those who need help to prove their claims against ICBC are being denied.

If Eby becomes premier, he will be pushed hard to deal with these issues at election time. Not to mention the larger items like the Royal B.C. Museum fiasco, and here in Kamloops, the promised (again) cancer clinic, which has been buried on some shelf somewhere, or mistakenly dropped into the round file at the end of the desk.

No matter who takes over the helm, there is a lot to be done if secrecy continues.

Kamloops-North Thompson B.C. Liberal MLA Peter Milobar says he’s hearing lots of grassroots opposition from NDP supporters over some of the government’s policies. That may be just a political jab, but Milobar told CFJC’s Susan Edgell that he doesn’t see any of the possible leaders having the personal popularity that John Horgan has.

I believe he’s spot on with that comment.

A lot of confidence-building will be necessary before the NDP is ready for another election.
