Flood threat recedes

Kamloops boat launches to re-open as City winds down flood protection

KAMLOOPS — After a month-plus closure, the City of Kamloops announced its boat launches on the Thompson River will re-open to the public Friday (July 15).

In a news release, the City says the move is due to water levels now being low enough for Kamloops Fire Rescue boats to access the river. Residents are asked to use extra caution on the waterways. And boaters are being asked to minimize their wakes to avoid erosion of riverbanks.

Additionally, the City is beginning to demobilize its temporary flood protection measures as river levels continue to recede. Starting this weekend, any Kamloops residents who received sand and sandbags from the City during freshet, can dispose of them at the Mission Flats or Barnhartvale landfills for free. The City says sand must be removed from the bags.

Water levels in local rivers remain unseasonably high and fast flowing with large amounts of debris. The B.C. River Forecast Centre has a high streamflow advisory in place for the South Thompson River and the Thompson River from Kamloops to Spences Bridge.
