KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops in collaboration with Transition Kamloops is launching a new initiative to help people get well-informed about the area while focusing on sustainability.

Through the walkable, self-guided audio tours, locals and visitors alike can listen to the stories of development in the city.

“We want people to recognize that change is already happening. It’s already happening in negatives, but it’s already happening in positives,” says Kim Naqvi with the Community Alliance for a Resilient Kamloops.

Naqvi adds that she wants people to learn about the history as well as sustainability in the community.

“Just to get people thinking about their landscapes and connecting to the natural places in Kamloops, the walkable places in Kamloops and where are the activities I can engage in.”

The tour touches on a variety of locations and the significance of each. Some include Victoria Street, Kamloops’ Makerspace and the city’s rivers.

“When we live in Kamloops and we look at the river with our beautiful views, if you have one, are we aware of what the river does and how it actually works and how we are engaged with it every time we turn on our taps?” Naqvi adds.

Each of the five stops highlights a different aspect of the development — past, present and future.

“I find that not too many people living in Kamloops know a heck of a lot about it so it’s fun to have things that get people out and get people more excited about their community as it stands,” says Kamloops resident Jedd Macmillan.

The tour addresses the importance of sustainability.

“Every place in the world needs sustainability, otherwise how do we manage to continue living? And we need to make sure the basic things that allow that like water, clean air to breathe, proper housing — that there are ways for them to continue existing,” says resident Nela Mora.

The creators of the project really wanted to make sure users of the tour are educated in a fun way.

“Well, we can do tours, people can go out on their own, we can give people information in a creative way and we can take them somewhere positive instead of somewhere negative,” Naqvi adds.

People wanting to take part in the different tours can do so through the Kamloops Sustainability Stories Audio Tour while learning about the city’s heritage.
