KAMLOOPS — The BC Wildlife Park and Monte Creek Winery have partnered for another year to raise funds in support of a local endangered species: badgers.

Only 350 badgers remain in B.C. and the stretch of the Trans Canada highway that runs near the winery is a place where many badgers are killed.

“It really hit home to us that it was something that we could champion and push forward to bring awareness and raise funds,” said Ashley Demedeiros-Cox, marketing manager at Monte Creek Winery.

“In July, we have a campaign where you can donate directly to a badger conservation group through sales in the tasting room or on our website,” she said.

“We’re also running a live auction that’s in partnership with the [BC] Wildlife Park.”

On top of raising awareness, their goal for the campaign is to raise money for conservation. Monte Creek Winery is auctioning off two paintings painted by the Park’s resident badger, Bloom.

“We were approached by Monte Creek winery, a great partner of ours just down the highway,” said Glenn Grant, executive director of the BC Wildlife Park.

“They would like to raise some money and raise some awareness for badgers and for the park to help care for our badger.”

“Bloom is a wonderful badger here. [She’s] been doing a couple of paintings which are over at Monte Creek to be auctioned off,” said Grant.
