High streamflow advisory ends for North Thompson; South Thompson expected to recede
KAMLOOPS — The B.C. River Forecast Centre (BCRFC) has ended the high streamflow advisory for the North Thompson River.
In an update Tuesday (July 12) morning, BCRFC says flows in the North Thompson River have dropped below a two-year return period are forecast to recede. However, a high streamflow advisory remains in effect for the South Thompson River – including Shuswap Lake – and the Thompson River from Kamloops to Spences Bridge.
While both systems have fallen and are forecast to recede, the BCRFC says the South Thompson River’s flows remain near a five-year return period, and the downstream flows at the Thompson River are between a two-to-five-year return period.
“Current weather models predict drier conditions for the upcoming week and water levels are expected to continue the downward trend,” BCRFC states. “Since water levels are relatively high for this time of year, the river and lake systems are still vulnerable to any potential widespread heavy rainfall event in the upcoming weeks. Smaller creek systems are highly vulnerable to short-duration and high intensity rain from convective thunderstorm activity.”
