After hot June, Kamloops construction sector on pace for second-busiest year ever

KAMLOOPS — It might not be record-setting territory, but the Kamloops building sector was on a torrid pace during the first half of 2022.

New numbers from the City of Kamloops Building Inspection Division show $38.6 million in permits issued last month, driving the year-to-date total to $187.3 million.

Much of June’s construction permit activity was in the commercial sector, totaling $21.2 million.

Builders began putting up 42 residential units last month, boosting the year-to-date total to 114.

The record year for building activity in Kamloops took place in 2020, with permits for the Phil and Jennie Gaglardi Patient Care Tower at Royal Inland Hospital pushing the year-end total to $416.1 million.

The second-highest year for permit activity was 2019, at $288.3 million. To date, 2022 is on pace to exceed that total.
