KAMLOOPS — A unique mixture of Indigenous and non-Indigenous performers will come together in Kamloops for one night only in August.

Lead by the Margit Sky Project and joined by members of the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra and the Sage Hill drummers and dancers, the concert will take place on August 14. The event is named ‘Music for the People.’

A symphony orchestra is a colonial art form not usually mixed with Indigenous music. For Rod Bandura, he could never have imagined hearing his music come together in this fashion after writing the songs back in the early 1990s.

“It’s going to be quite an amazing experience to do that. Although we did play these songs quite a bit back in the early ’90s, we were on MUCH Music quite a few times with these songs. But to bring them back to life, and especially with the drum group and the symphony, it should be quite the experience for all around,” said Bandura

As part of the event, proceeds will be donated to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society. Margit Gossage explained that the society was chosen because of the role residential schools played in Rod’s life.

“We chose the Indian Residential School Survivors Society because at eight years old, Rod’s mom was taken from New Westminster and brought here to Kamloops, and she remained here for seven years. She became a survivor. And because she was a survivor, I met Rod and we are enjoying life together. Thankfully because she was one tough cookie,” said Gossage.
