SOUND OFF: Summer events in Kamloops are back in business

Jul 5, 2022 | 9:49 AM

EVERY YEAR, 1.9 million people visit Kamloops — and not just for the tournaments that the city is known for. Kamloops has a thriving creative community, with a vibrant art and music scene, as well as being a hotspot for foodies. Over the past couple of years, the exciting events that are normally hosted in the city have been put on hold, but finally these are back. This summer you can enjoy live theatre, music, art exhibitions, a full baseball season (go NorthPaws!) and some great foodie events and markets. Kamloops has come alive again, so you can make the most of everything that the city has to offer.

Enjoy the arts

Kamloops has a long history of supporting artists. At Kamloops Art Gallery this summer there are some wonderful and thought-provoking exhibitions. The “Here Elsewhere Other Hauntings” is a retrospective of the British Columbian artist Jin-me Yoon. The upcoming “Ghost Days” exhibition features experimental art that combines photography, music, film, video and performance by Calgary-based artist Terrance Houle. If you want to create your own art, the Kamloops Art Party is running events for all ages throughout the summer, including Woodburning 101, Intro to Watercolors and Intro to Resin.

Theatre Under the Trees

Between July 4 and 23, Project X Theatre is hosting a special festival, “Theatre Under the Trees,” which takes place in Prince Charles Park. There are two great family-friendly productions that you can watch, whilst enjoying a sunset picnic in the park. Just make sure that you take some bug spray, as mosquitoes are active in the evenings. The Canadian climate is perfect for those pesky insects, but insect repellent can stop you from getting bitten. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is a fun production for all ages, and Project X is also putting on Red Riding Hood. If you’re looking for something a bit more grown up, there is an adult-only improv night on July 22 at 9:00 p.m.

Foodie fun

From June 25th right through until the end of October, the Kamloops Farmer’s Market is back every week, Wednesdays on Victoria Street and Saturdays on St. Paul Street. The market is open from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. and is the go-to place for local food, crafts and art. Local vendors include Asam Orchard, Bell’s Biscuits, Brynn’s Bakery, Kurt’s Deli and the Good Little Tea Company. There are lots of street food options at the market from vegetarian treats to churros, so you can sample some of the best that Kamloops has to offer and enjoy spending time with other like-minded foodies. There is a real sense of community at the farmer’s market and locals come back every week to pick up their favorite goods.

Kamloops is the go-to place for art, culture and food this summer. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, there’s plenty to do for the whole family.
