WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — The two people who were taken to hospital following a shooting at the grounds of the Williams Lake Stampede are expected to survive their injuries.

In an update Monday (July 4) morning, S/Sgt. Darren Dodge, acting office in charge of the Williams Lake RCMP, says the Sunday (July 3) afternoon shooting is believed to be targeted, however one of the people injured was an innocent bystander.

Williams Lake RCMP were called to the Stampede Grounds shortly after 3:30 p.m. during the final day of the popular rodeo. The rodeo was underway when several people reported hearing shots. Police say one person was taken into custody.

Williams Lake Stampede President Court Smith said in a Facebook message that the thousands of rodeo fans in the rodeo grandstand were safely evacuated.

RCMP say the investigation is a priority and is ongoing. Anyone with information, dash camera footage, or other video of the incident, and witnesses who have not yet spoken with police, are asked to call Williams Lake RCMP at (250) 392-6211.
