LOGAN LAKE, B.C. — The Municipality of Logan Lake celebrated its 50th anniversary this past weekend. Although the event was delayed for two years due to COVID-19 — locals and visitors turned out for a weekend of fun.

Logan Lake was formed in 1970 and was originally built to house the employees of the Highland Valley Copper mine.

After a close call in 2021 due to a large wildfire that almost hit the town, Logan Lake officials were happy the community was able to gather for the event.

“We’ve come back and I think the celebration we ended up having was fantastic. We had our biggest Canada Day celebration we’ve had in many years and it was great. It brought a lot of people to town and that was kind of the goal of it,” says Mike Carlsen, Logan Lake’s community development officer.

People from across Canada also joined in on the festivities.

“It was a great way to welcome everybody back to the community. People travelled from Saskatchewan and Manitoba and we congratulated our 50-year residents, so that was nice. They all got a key to the city for being here for 50 years,” says District of Logan Lake Councillor Claire Newman.

Joan Saunders moved to Logan Lake more than 50 years ago when the municipality was a fraction of what it is today.

“It’s been a wonderful town to be in. It’s been fun watching it grow and change over the years. I mean, we had 100 homes when we moved here in August of ’71.”

Now, there are roughly 1,300 homes in Logan Lake and the population sits at nearly 2,500.

The anniversary was capped off with a pancake breakfast. The weekend showcased fireworks, a dance and live music to commemorate the celebration.

“Well this weekend has been wonderful for me [and others] because I was able to see people who I haven’t seen in a long time because they’ve come back and said, ‘Hi,'” adds Saunders.
