KAMLOOPS — The much-anticipated Y Dream Home Lottery draw took place Tuesday (June 28) morning. Two Kamloops residents took home the two biggest prizes: nearly half a million dollars, and the Dream Home in Tobiano.

Geoff Barker won the 50/50 draw, taking home $464,875.

“I’m going to talk to my financial advisor,” said Barker when asked what he’d do with the money.

Brad Gerow and his mother Marilyn are the winners of the Dream Home in Tobiano. He was sitting in his work truck when his phone started blowing up.

“Bryce phoned my mom because that was the number on [the ticket],” he said.

“It was friends on Facebook and texts and stuff that were sending me message after message after message.”

And as for the pair’s plans for the house?

“Sell. I already phoned the real estate agent, just waiting for him to phone me back,” he said.

The brand new house is valued at nearly $1.3 million. It was where Kamloops Y spokesperson Bryce Herman phoned the big winners to tell them the news.

“It’s absolutely thrilling,” said Herman.

“I think the biggest thing for me is that I know that these are life-changing numbers. When you give someone close to half-a-million, tax-free on the 50/50 lottery. That’s life changing.”

“This home that we’re standing in at $1.2 [million] plus, getting close to $1.3 million in value… is also going to be life-changing.

Those who didn’t have their name drawn can console themselves by knowing they helped this year’s lottery be the Y’s the most successful ever.

“A lot of the funds from this lottery helps to keep the Kamloops Y alive and performing services and keeping our buildings going and having programs and activities that make a difference in people’s lives,” said Kamloops Y Executive Director Colin Reid.
