LOW/MODERATE FIRE RISK

A year after the heat dome, fire danger within the Kamloops Fire Centre is much lower

KAMLOOPS — In June of 2021, Kamloops and much of British Columbia were under a heat dome. This year, however, it’s a completely different story.

The Kamloops Fire Centre says the current fire risk for the area is low-to-moderate.

“Having this low-to-moderate fire danger rating is good to remember for people to practice that extra caution — especially going into the long weekend and partaking in recreational activities,” says Shaelee Stearns with the Kamloops Fire Centre.

Although the risk is fairly low according to Stearns, Kamloops’ forecast for Tuesday (June 28) and Wednesday is calling for thunder and lightning which can spark up fires.

“Thunderstorms and lightning are a natural cause for wildfires so it’s not preventable through mitigation and prescribed burns. We can mitigate that risk but they’re the ones that report the wildfires and that’s a really helpful tool that we have,” adds Stearns.

The Kamloops Fire Centre reminds residents to report any wildfires to the BC Wildfire Service or your local fire and rescue service.
