KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops mayoral race is getting crowded as a fifth candidate — and third current city councillor — has announced they’re running for the city’s top seat.

Current first-term councillor Sadie Hunter is joining the race, making her announcement Thursday morning (June 23) at City Hall, flanked by her family, friends and supporters.

Hunter joins fellow councillors Arjun Singh and Dieter Dudy on the ballot, leaving just three incumbents left confirmed running for council. Local business owners Ray Dhaliwal and Reid Hamer-Jackson have also announced their intentions to run for mayor.

Hunter noted diversity as one of her main reasons for deciding to run for mayor.

“I really feel like I’m in a position to bring a level of positivity to the discussion and to the discourse. Because there has been some challenges around disagreeing and being disrespectful and I think we need to move through that and rise above it and learn to work together as a team and as a community — to get through some of the tough things that we are facing,” said Hunter.

Hunter will be seeking public input on her platform throughout the summer as she consults with Kamloops residents about what’s important to them. Personally, Hunter hit on two key aspects that will shape her priorities including dealing with the issues of inflation on all city hall portfolios.

“The other thing that we will be trying to navigate is how we’ll move through emergency response to weather events and climate-related events, because I don’t think things like the heat dome and flooding, even air quality are going to change. We need to find a way to navigate through those because every time something like that happens our staff are allocated to responding, which is exactly where they should be, but it also means that sometimes projects are on hold for longer and it’s hard to get the work done. It’s finding that balance.”

The 2022 municipal election is slated for October 15.
