Little Shuswap Lake Band evacuates two properties; Shuswap Lake expected to peak over the weekend

CHASE, B.C. — The Little Shuswap Lake Band has issued an evacuation order for two lakefront properties due to high water.

The properties are located at 288 and 292 Schouten Road, at the mouth of Chum Creek between Little Shuswap and Shuswap Lakes.

Occupants are ordered to leave those properties immediately and register with the band’s Andrea Stelter at (250) 318-5723.

Meantime, the Columbia-Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) says it expects the Shuswap Lake level to peak at about 349.1 metres this coming weekend or early next week.

However, the CSRD notes that could be impacted by weather factors including high temperatures and rainfall — both of which are expected in the coming days.

The 349.1-metre peak would be roughly equivalent to the peak level experienced in 2018.

“These predictions are looking at some high numbers with localized flooding already taking place in a few areas of the Shuswap, said Shuswap Emergency Operations Centre Director Derek Sutherland. “There has been the need to close a few parks, for example. But the projections stop short of the severe flooding levels seen in 2012.”

Preparations are being made in case the lake exceeds the predicted level. The CSRD notes a level of 349.2 metres typically results in flooding in downtown Sicamous.
