KAMLOOPS — The Thompson-Nicola Regional District’s (TNRD) chair will not run for re-election ahead of the district’s upcoming election.

In a public statement issued Tuesday (June 21), Ken Gillis announced he will not run for director in Electoral Area “L” (Grasslands) as he has married and moved to Merritt during his term.

“However, there also comes a time when a person just knows, or should know, that it’s time to go and I want to leave knowing that my three terms have been positive for the region and for those who elected me,” Gillis states. “Of course, I will leave with mixed feelings, but mainly with a tremendous sense of gratitude to the electors of Area “L”, who have supported me in three successive elections.”

Gillis, first elected as a director in 2011, has been the chair since 2018, winning re-election for the fourth time in 2021. The previous year was a challenging one for the TNRD, emphasized by the district’s board of directors moved forward with an audit of its entire organization after an investigation revealed lavish spending by former CAO Sukh Gill, who has since been replaced.

Gillis declined to step down as chair despite calls from three TNRD directors following the revelation that Gillis didn’t share allegations of Gill’s spending in January 2020. In March 2022, the TNRD Board of Directors formally apologized for a lack of accountability regarding Gill’s spending.

The TNRD’s general local election is scheduled for Oct. 15, 2022.
